Welcome!
| Hello! Debra here…
Welcome to The Book Nook’s first blog. Although it is new for The Book Nook - we hosted a blog at our other location and it was very popular. Here, you may post comments, recommend books, discourage a particular book (s) and stay current with what’s in the news, what’s new and what’s coming up. From time to time, you will find comments and post from one of the staff here at The Book Nook & Java Shop. Currently our staff includes; Me, (Book Lady) Ann Nelson, (Annibel) Josh Pickard (Surfer Dude) and Lisa Bush (Lisa:). On occasion we will post comments regarding titles we are currently reading, have read and want to read. We encourage you to post your comments as well! To view the books we have reviewed click on our names. (We are still waiting for current reviews from Surfer Dude and Annible! (They’re new employees:) Here’s a little history for you regarding The Book Nook & Java Shop! I opened the doors to The Book Nook & Java Shop in December of 2002. Prior to that I worked as a food broker for Van Eerden Distribution, a family run company located in Grand Rapids, MI . My grandmother taught school in Montague in the late 1930 circa and as a youngster we would spend time with them here in the summer. In the 90’s, I purchased a sailboat named Whispurr and kept her on White Lake . Later on, I transferred my job up this way, all while realizing there was not a bookstore or coffee shop (both staples in my life at the time). That’s the short story!
In five short years there have been so many changes. The year we opened was phenomenal…then the following year, the Lakes Mall opened and it hurt our book sales nearly 25%. The following year, we gained back most of that business and then the economy took a turn for the worst… Today the Book Nook & Java Shop is stable and we have the loyalty of the White Lake community and surrounding areas such as North Muskegon, Muskegon, Shelby, New Era, Hart etc., to thank for this. All have been very supportive of one of the very few independent bookstores left! The Book Nook has been very fortunate to have a number of outstanding authors visit. From Garrison Keillor to Judith Guest, along with Diane Rehm and local authors such as Jeff Alexander from the Muskegon Chronicle and Laurie Keller - Children’s author and illustrator from Muskegon and Kathy-jo Wargin of the Legend series (Legend of Sleeping Bear Dunes, Legend of the Edmund Fitzgerald etc.. This is just to name a few. Additional authors are listed on our website if you’re interested! The Book Nook & Java Shop recently partnered with WZZM TV 13’s “Take Five” to host a book club that will air the first Monday of each month beginning Monday, February 1st at 4:30pm. The Book Club will meet to discuss the title at The Book Nook on the first Tuesday of each month from 5-6pm! The book that I selected for January is The Best American Short Stories 2007. I have now read more than half the stories but I won’t share the details - you can watch it on Take Five on Monday, February 4th or see the video shortly there after. I will also review it on this blog after that date! Okay…here is the deal - this blog is new so we want activity and comments. For every comment posted this week and next, The Book Nook & Java Shop will give you a complimentary latte, cappuccino or fresh brewed coffee! Post a comment!!! How do you feel about all of the political titles on the market these days? Example; Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, GW Bush, Alan Greenspan etc., etc., etc. Do you purchase these titles? Would you? Peace! |
I just finished reading PLATO and a PLAtYPUS suggested by Book Lady. It was a good read, combining jokes with philosophy in
I LOVE “Plato”! It is a great coffee table book as it is a great conversation piece!
So anybody who hasn’t had a soup lunch with Deb and Dude is missing out on something special. Great soup and the normally good natured Book Lady and Dude who sets the standard for begging. Her Friday special Lenten soups are always great. Sometimes you even get crackers.
I have had the soup. It is delectable. Not too mention the corn bread (which Dude really seems like to like). But all the mouth watering soup in the world does not compare to the camaraderie and atmosphere of this lovely coffee shop nestled nicely between the pub and the pet store in montague. Thanks Book Lady for making our lunch break such a joy. Please also pass my thanks onto Dude via oyster crackers.
Thank you Love Monkey! We so appreciate your support of our little shop in our little community!
YO! Who are you? You sound intelligent and hot. Are you? Do you read? If so what?
HO
What is up with Deb’s selection of preferred porn - er, poems ? There appears to be some pent up passion … Quag
LOL! I know Debra quite well and I don’t think it is “pent up” so much as she is such a passionate and spontaneous person. She probably appreciates the poem for that reason.
Nope, it’s pent up.
Thanks you for your support Surfer The Dude (STD)!
Pent up - yep … hopefully Steve can unravel the truth …
OK….notes from a Schizophrenic reader…I am currently reading
Being schizophrenic…I should probably post a number of times:
OK….notes from the Schizophrenic Reader…I am currently reading “The Best American Short Stories 2007″ (great book..loved many of the stories but not all. Easy to read when there isn’t a lot of time); “Tales & Poems of Edgar Allan Poe” (What can I say…oh wait…”Nevermore” I LOVE Poe); By Margo Anand “The Art of S…”(Oh..wait…I shouldn’t list that one..interesting though); “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston” (Not too far into it..but loving it so far); and by Dante Alighieri “The Divine Comedy” (I am in the deepest ring of hell at the moment). this listing does not include various journal articles etc. I told you I was a schizophrenic reader…I can’t seem to read just one thing. Now all I need are multiple personalities and perhaps we can read these all at the same time….
I’m going for FREE coffee…it keeps me jittery and helps me read lots of pages from various books! I get a kick how…when I click on my name “Schizophrenic Reader” the blog.com page informs me that I have no friends. Hilarious…(but ooohhh so sad). I guess I read too much?
Schizophrenic Reader,
I will be your friend. I am currently reading: Crashing Through by Robert Korson, Great American Short Stories, Their Eyes Were Watching God, John(NIV), Maxim, and Sports Illustrated. Isn’t it neat how we have something in common. I like coffee too.
Come on in for that free cup of coffee!
I have yet to read Divine Comedy but it is on my long list of titles that I want to read by years end! How did you like it?
Oh my Gosh…Anonymous…Are you…ME? (after all…I am Schizophrenic Reader and should probably pose this question from time to time…)
I loved his first book - “Shadow Divers” - however “Crashing Through” didn’t have the same appeal for me. I enjoyed it - but not nearly as much as “Shadow Divers”!
If you like Kurson’s writing - I must recommend “The Manhunt - The Twelve Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer”! Great Read. Different perspective from other Lincoln books that I have read! Moves quick…
Book Lady!,
It is an amazing Read! I find it to be actually quite timeless. But understanding the references Dante puts in his Comedy is a very important part of enjoying the book. But…I must say…his HELL scares the HELL out of me.
Schizophrenic Reader,
Okay - That’s it! I’m taking it on vacation with me next week!
STD, Quag…I would love to see one of your favorite poems posted here!
I am sorry I missed your Reading Club last night. This is a busy week and I just could not work another thing in. Rita and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit last Saturday night. The music was entertaining and even more, the fun group made us feel welcome and part of it all, even though we were newcomers. Looking forward to next time.
Will still try to make the reading group next month if your invite is still open.
Saw my poem on your blog. Thanks. Loved reading the poem of the first place winner. What a great, mature poem for a gal who looks so young. One thing I particularly appreciated about reading on your last “slam” night, was the attention paid to keeping it quiet when poetry was read. Any noise, no matter how innocent of intent to disrupt, takes away from the reading. Also, your good sound system was a joy to use for a change. Reading one’s poetry is so hard to do under any circumstance and I found your place to be a good place to read. So often when I have been asked to read, I find I am competing with kitchen noise, table cleanup or folks chatting in the back of the room and worse, a tinny sound system. There is just no point in reading under those circumstances. The point of the poem is usually lost, as every word must be heard clearly to achieve understanding of the poet’s message. Reading a poem is a very intimate and personal way of communicating. I do think you understand and appreciate that, and I am sure all your poets thank you, as I do.
